Big Bang Experiment Back on !
The machine which could shed light on the Big Bang has been restarted more than a year after it was shut down because of technical faults.
Beams of protons circulated in the Large Hadron Collider on Friday for the first time since it was damaged shortly after its launch in September 2008.
The successful switch-on is a significant step forward for the team hoping to use the machine for new scientific experiments on the creation of the universe.
The collider, which is buried 100 metres underground near Geneva, Switzerland, is supposed to recreate conditions seen after the Big Bang by firing protons round a 17-mile tunnel and smashing them into each other.
But some of the experts involved were caught out when the restart happened around nine hours earlier than expected.
"Some of the scientists had gone home and had to be called back in," said James Gillies, spokesman for the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). Thanks to ( Sky News )
